Here’s another mermaid! I really enjoyed the rougher, more expressive workflow of the first mermaid painting I made and wanted to try it out again. Taking a rougher approach with more “facets” and random details has definitely made the painting process for characters more enjoyable for me! I guess mermaids are a perfect subject matter to test new workflows on, since they are so open to interpretation. You can add as many fantasy elements as you want and since they’re usually floating, it lends itself to lots of creativity in terms of the pose. Hope you like this one!

Man this is beautiful. I followed your art for quite a while already and you are now the first artist I am following on patreon. I just adore your artstyle and can't wait to learn more from you. Thanks for the content 🙏

Woah really nice, love the koi type of colors! Would be cool to create a family of mermaids based on different type of koi color schemes. 🤔

The crystal hair 😍😍

I love this, and I really enjoy underwater illustration because of all the things you can do with hair, or items floating about. I do struggle wit the lighting, it has to be said, but it's always a fun challenge!

I really like how the hair looks like crystals 💜

I've always been a big fan of the 'mermaid tail looks like legs in a costume and has Just A Big Knee' thing, a la Ariel. This looks great!

Danica Robbemond

I loveeee. How did you make it so shiny looking?! Wow.

I love the color on this mermaid

Loish

thanks! i think the highlight colors worked out really well, since it's so high-contrast it feels more shiny than softer highlights would have. screen/overlay layers are helpful for this!

Loish

haha yeah i always wonder if mermaid knees make sense, but i like how they look so i just embrace it!

FaroreNightclaw

They are fantasy creatures after all.. I think whether or not they have knees is entirely up to the artist X)

Hi Lois, will this art be available as print soon?

Anonymous

Also I would love to know which brush(es) you used for this painting and the blue mermaid?

Loish

I used a mix of brushes! mostly from viorie's brush set, and I also recently downloaded wes gardner's brush pack 2 which had lots of interesting textured ones.

Loish

Hey! I wasn't planning on offering it as a print but I might make it available. I'll get back to you if I do!
