For year Danielle had always had problems keeping up when playing sports or in gym class. At first it was just a bit of stiffness, but it slowly progressed to where she could no longer run and barely walk. The doctors kept testing her but have still not been able to properly diagnosis what her affliction is. All they can do is treat the symptoms and help Danielle remain mobile.
She waits nervously in the clinic. The day has finally arrived when Danielle will no longer be able to hide her condition. She has occasionally used a cane when walking, but today marks the newest stage in her progression. The nurse enters and explains to Danielle that she will now be fitted with her KAFO’s. They were measured a month ago, and are now ready to be fitted. The nurse then proceeds to place them on Danielle’s legs, adjusting them and showing her how to wear them. She then instructs Danielle on how to get around on crutches while in the KAFO’s. Danielle is not overly happy to have to use either the crutches or the KAFO’s, but she accepts that she needs them. At least she can move around much faster now.
After practicing around the clinic wit the nurse supervising, Danielle feels confident enough to leave using her new appliances. She heads out to a mall to meet a friend. They shop for a while, but Danielle starts to get tired. A brief stop at the food court for a snack and a break allows Danielle to rest and recover. She can only hope that her condition does not continue to worsen; she cannot imagine what any further treatment might involve…
