Hello Patrons!

As said in the previous post, I've been asked if MGS made some NPC voicelines as SFX. We currently don't, and it wasn't something I thought about so far; because when I DM, I do all voices and I don't expect people to do it for me. However, I always listen to the community propositions and I'd like your input on that. It's definitely a creative idea.

These SFX would be for the Guardian+ (10$) tier.

Example of sentences :

  • "Stop right there!"
  • "Hey, you, ppssst, right at the corner"
  • "Welcome in my shop!"

Etc.

Pros

  • Professional quality voice acting
  • Incredible for the immersion
  • Unique
  • Possibility to collaborate with voice artists
  • We could base some of the fantastic descriptions of dScryb

Cons

  • Not polyvalent. Limited to a small amount of lines per NPC (~30).
  • Very costly for us as we can't do it ourselves
  • We probably won't be able to offer them every month.
  • Will be either in English or in fantasy conlangs.

Thank you for your participation! Please never hesitate to suggest new ideas.

Hi! I won't have the use of it, it would be very strange to include English sentences in a full French adventure. I use Syrinscape to manage the audio during the play and they have a lot of sentences I cannot use for the same reasons (I use Synrinscape for the tool, but your productions are far more qualitative!). Though, I think fantasy conlangs could be interesting, because it has the power to add so much flavor to any fantasy roleplaying adventure (+ it's universal). Good luck with the recording of imaginary languages! I studied several years at university linguistics and a bit of "non natural languages" and it's not easy at all to produce anything with imaginary languages. However, if you choose actors/actresses, I advise you to recruit someone who knows IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) : thus, it will be much easier for them to pronounce quite correctly any language. I'm not an expert in imaginary languages but if you need someone to answer some linguistics questions, feel free to contact me. Hope my comment will be useful one way or another. Have a nice day.

United States Hello, I am not a voice actor and and only do very limited role playing voices when I DM. I would be interested in a few unique voice lines to set the tone for an encounter and than would fill in the ongoing dialog myself. It would help and I think I would use them if available. The atmosphere sounds that have been created here have already enhanced my presentation in significant ways. Thank you for all your wonderful work.

Hi Julien, I never heard about IPA and it seems to be a very useful tool. I'll keep that in mind. So far it's unlikely we'll do these voicelines on a regular basis, however, one or two fantasy packs in conlangs could be cool! Thank you!

I recall fantasy software games (CRPGs) where you would pick voices to match classes / character concepts. It was tough to find likable voices. If you sampled they would say a few things to help you choose. It did add some flavor to the adventure. Others like the Baldur's Gate series had specific voices--Minsc and Boo anyone?! Those were entertaining. Usually a voice works better than none (unless it's really bad). So a voice in Deus Ex or Fallout by the character is great! Otherwise you get dialogue only (for character, but NPCs still can have cool dialogue) in Skyrim, etc. For my VTT I try to create the same enjoyable audio visual experience. I would enjoy even the occasional small voice pack. In the meantime I use some other sites where at least some human phrases are spoken--hopefully fantasy or sci fi--and use those sound clips. I like how some Foundry VTT mods let you attach sounds/voices to the token. I've got many monsters dialed in. But not so much for the humanoid NPCs. I did experiment with MorphVOXPro and using the sound driver with push to talk through Discord. One can speak in realtime! Or record some samples. But dialing in a variety of interesting voices takes time.

One ... could ... also ... sample clips from the public domain readings on LibraVox online. While doing my own software dev I'd listen to books being read. There are some very wonderful voices by the volunteer speakers.
