Chapter 255

Due to time constraints, we sped up our journey a bit, and Yun Ze Han returned to his original demeanor, giving Zhang Zhifeng a bit of relief. A month later, we had completed half of the planned journey and had switched to a new carriage.

Zhang Zhifeng was driving the carriage, with Yun Ze Han and Ling Chunann inside. Because the road was not smooth, the carriage moved slowly, but Zhang Zhifeng's driving skills were good enough to keep the ride relatively stable. Ling Chunann was reading a book, with another one beside him, both of which he had bought from cities we passed through and hadn't read before. Yun Ze Han was meditating with his eyes closed, it was unclear if he was practicing his cultivation or just resting.

Ling Chunann didn't disturb him, quickly finishing the two books in front of him, then glanced out of the window, bored. The forest outside was dense, and this path was the widest one Zhang Zhifeng could find. Seeing him driving so cautiously, Ling Chunann asked in a low voice, "Senior brother, do you need help?"

"No worries, I can manage," Zhang Zhifeng replied with a satisfied smile, touched by his junior brother's thoughtfulness.

Hearing Zhang Zhifeng's refusal, Ling Chunann didn't insist and went back to his seat, playing with a chess pot in his hands. He had already finished the books he bought, and since Yun Ze Han was awake, he could've had a chat or played chess with him, but now he was a bit bored.

Suddenly, Ling Chunann became alert and instructed, "098, scan for energy fluctuations within ten miles." Cultivators, whether they practiced immortality or demonic arts, emitted special energy fluctuations. Although 098 couldn't identify their exact identities, it could still easily detect their general level and quantity from a short distance.

Surprised at how his host knew its scanning limit was ten miles, 098 immediately began the scan. A few seconds later, it reported nervously, "Host, there are five cultivators at the Golden Core stage or above surrounding us, including two at the full Golden Core realm, and their energy fluctuations suggest they are demonic cultivators." It then added, "There's also one at the Nascent Soul middle stage!"

Ling Chunann nodded, indicating he understood.

098 was confused, "Host, we haven't provoked any demonic cultivators recently." Then it remembered the demonic cultivator that disappeared in the floating city, "Could it be that the remaining demonic cultivator went back to report, and now they've come for revenge?"

"Maybe," Ling Chunann replied noncommittally. "But right now, I can't defeat them alone."

098 was at a loss; this indeed posed a problem. If it were just Golden Core cultivators, Ling Chunann could potentially escape or even eliminate them all with his current strength. However, the presence of a Nascent Soul demonic cultivator represented a qualitative leap in power, a realm many cultivators could not reach in their lifetimes.

Worrying over its host, 098 estimated the chances of winning at only one percent, a generous estimate given out of friendship. The world seemed too dangerous for its host.

"098, I didn't expect you to have so little faith in me," Ling Chunann suddenly said, startling 098, "No, host, I have absolute faith in you."

At that moment, the hidden demonic cultivators launched their attack. The horses neighed and stopped abruptly, and before Zhang Zhifeng could understand what was happening, he was pushed off the carriage by a force, narrowly escaping a huge rift that appeared where he had been sitting and on the ground beneath the carriage. Fearing for his life, he quickly realized the push might have come from Yun Ze Han or Ling Chunann.

Without time to think, Zhang Zhifeng grabbed his sword and attacked the nearest attacker in black. But before he could get close, he was blown away by a strong wind and passed out after vomiting blood.

"Host, why aren't they attacking directly?" 098 panicked.

"Don't worry," Ling Chunann reassured, gripping his sword hilt. This was his first direct confrontation with cultivators in this world, and he was somewhat eager to test himself.

"Boy, I know you're in there. Come out," a hoarse voice called from outside.

"That's the Nascent Soul stage demonic cultivator," 098 informed.

In fact, at this level, demonic cultivators were referred to as Demon Nascent Soul, but Ling Chunann preferred simplicity, so 098 adapted its terminology accordingly.

"There's no need for so much talk," one of the demonic cultivators whispered secretly, impatient. "If not for them, our Demon City would have been built already. The lord gave us only two days."

"If we don't capture them within two days, we're all dead."

"But for two mere minor

cultivators," the voice trailed off.

Listening to 098's relay, Ling Chunann hummed, clearly understanding that these demonic cultivators were here for him and Yun Ze Han, but they didn't intend to kill them.

As Ling Chunann considered whether to simply go with them, Yun Ze Han suddenly woke up, his pupils blood red, and attacked Ling Chunann without reason.

"Host, this is bad. The male lead has turned demonic!" 098 exclaimed.

"I see," Ling Chunann dodged Yun Ze Han's attack, feeling helpless with external and internal crises now. Yun Ze Han's cultivation level had inexplicably risen from the peak of the Qi Refining stage to the early Nascent Soul stage, surpassing Ling Chunann's current level.

With a loud bang, the carriage exploded into pieces, and the Golden Core demonic cultivators surrounding them were thrown away by the blast.

"This kid has turned demonic!" The highest-ranking demonic cultivator shouted, ordering, "Kill him!" A demonic cultivator's power increases with their cultivation, especially those with high potential. Yun Ze Han, having just turned demonic and reached the Nascent Soul stage, was a testament to his exceptional talent.

Standing in the center, Ling Chunann was miraculously unharmed, perhaps due to instinct, as Yun Ze Han's attacks were no longer aimed at him but at the advancing Golden Core demonic cultivators.

Four Golden Core demonic cultivators and the Nascent Soul demonic cultivator attacked Yun Ze Han, while another shifted their focus towards Ling Chunann.

As the demonic cultivator's sword was about to pierce Ling Chunann's dantian, he was momentarily pleased, thinking this would earn him great merit. But then Ling Chunann, with a flick of his fingers, formed numerous sword shadows around the attacker.

The demonic cultivator, realizing the danger too late, tried to escape but was overwhelmed by the endless swords and was eventually pierced by several blades, understanding too late that Ling Chunann was not a mere Qi Refining cultivator but at least two levels higher than his own Golden Core mid-stage.

Seeing their comrade fall, the remaining three Golden Core demonic cultivators, under the instruction of the Nascent Soul cultivator, redirected their attack towards Ling Chunann. These included the two full Golden Core demonic cultivators and one late Golden Core stage. Although Ling Chunann initially held his own, the fight was not easy.

The demonic cultivators grew increasingly alarmed by Ling Chunann's apparent young age and high cultivation level. United, they couldn't defeat him, and they feared his future potential.

As the battle intensified, Ling Chunann started to struggle, sweat covering his face. Although his movements were still flawless, they were no longer as fluid.

After a few exchanges, the demonic cultivators saw an opportunity and attacked from all directions. But as they moved in, Ling Chunann's smile warned them too late of the encircling sword shadows.

The two full Golden Core demonic cultivators behind Ling Chunann didn't understand what happened, believing victory was near, only to be caught off guard by his counterattack.

The sole surviving late Golden Core demonic cultivator, injured breaking through the sword formation, despaired upon Ling Chunann's gaze.

After dealing with the last demonic cultivator, Ling Chunann swayed, having exhausted nearly all his spiritual energy on the sword formation. This wasn't a concern, as his spiritual energy would quickly replenish with the Water Spirit Pearl.

"Host, are you okay?" 098 asked, seeing Ling Chunann struggling to stand.

"I'm fine," Ling Chunann said, his voice strained, "I can barely suppress my cultivation level anymore."

Suppressing the urge to advance in cultivation was a struggle, and 098 couldn't help but feel that those who couldn't reach the Nascent Soul stage would envy Ling Chunann's plight.

Now wasn't the time for advancement, not only due to the surrounding dangers but also because Ling Chunann lacked sufficient cultivation to withstand the minor heavenly tribulation. 098 could only worry as Ling Chunann regained some strength with Spirit Gathering Pills and flew towards the ongoing battle between Yun Ze Han and the Nascent Soul demonic cultivator.

The battle was nearing its end. Yun Ze Han's recent ascent to the Nascent Soul stage was unstable, giving the higher-level demonic cultivator a slight advantage. However, the margin was minimal.

Ling Chunann arrived at the battlefield, choosing not to immediately intervene but noticed a nearby cliff. This cliff was the infamous Ghostly Abyss from the original story, rumored to be insurmountable for both cultivators and mortals alike, its depth unknown.

At that moment, Yun Ze Han, falling behind, suddenly surged in power, catching the demonic cultivator off guard and causing him to fall into the abyss. As the demonic cultivator fell, he pulled Yun Ze Han down with him.

Ling Chunann quickly grabbed Yun Ze Han's wrist, but a powerful suction from the abyss pulled them in despite his attempt to let go.
