I feel like, if anything, the earth magic here is a great example of modern human magic in this series. If I had to describe it, it feels like we’ve been around the wizard who just uses the spells like “Purify Food and Drink” and we just now got introduced to someone that uses fireball. There are obviously going to be more general spells in the magic system and those will often be due to the nature of their recency. Demon magic, the only type we’ve really been introduced to besides folk spells, is also known to be hyper specialized with demons openly stating how much pride they take in developing specific spells. That would be like how a warlock has a million variations of Eldritch Blast (aka Zoltraak) but it’s still just Eldritch Blast.

To continue on this point, modern human magic has already been the most simple yet general within the series with humanity’s version being developed heavily. All of their spells are designed to be simpler and more general because they don’t have the time to develop these overly complicated spells. Hell, even comparing how Frieren uses Zoltraak compared to Fern shows these differences with Frieren using her mana manipulation that she’s developed over these years while Fern just overwhelms folks with raw power and speed. It’s been shown throughout the show and it’s odd that this is what decided to set them off about the magic system.

Magic in Frieren isn't bounded by any rules that dictate what they can do. You can do just about anything from removing rust from bronze statues to putting mana in physical objects in order to manipulate it. All you need is to research it and time. I like to think of it as programming where you can make hyperspecific scripts like one where it's used to find every word the starts with a vowel in a text file but you can also use it to make a game like minecraft which is a lot less specific in what you can do with it.
