fun fact: the soldier who requested concubine fuyou was the soldier who stopped his peer from beating a villager last episode! His wisdom and cool head is what elevated his status enough to request her! :D

On the soldiers being poisoned in the field: Part of the point was that the villagers didn't provide the bowls and chopsticks and stuff. The locals would know what was poisonous in the area, and thus would avoid those materials when they put utensils together, but the soldiers would have no clue, so just grabbed whatever was at hand. That's why they were more susceptible to being poisoned by the local flora, and that's what Maomao picked up on. It's not just Maomao Sherlocking a solution out of nowhere. The clues are there if you know what they signify. For example, the pharmacist who reacts to this series picks up on lots of details about the poisons and diseases that most people wouldn't know about. The white face powder that was poisoning the babies, for example, was likely based on lead or arsenic.
