The first half of the episode is my favorite part. I understand why there isn't too much discussion around it. Just saying Stark is a warrior and Himmel is a hero. Not that stark can't be his own kind of "hero" but Himmel is THE HERO which is pretty clear at this point. 99% of reactors I saw with this episode went on a whole thing about how stark would pull the sword and become the true hero blah blah blah. That would demean Himmel as a character so much it would have made me drop the manga. Himmel is my favorite character because he has moments like this episode that is entirely in flashback. We see how much impact Himmel does to everyone in the series because he chose to be a hero even if fate declared him not to be one. He defeated the demon king and influenced so many people. You could even say that maybe that sword is never meant to be pulled in the first place. The true heroes are the ones who can't pull the sword but push forward either way. We don't know but its just a fun thing to think about. The scene with stark looking back at the sword gets entirely misinterpreted by the audience not thinking about the deeper meanings behind this show. Its simply just him reflecting upon himself and thinking about how Himmel would have acted and what he would think. Its the fact that he sort of unfairly compares himself to Himmel but compares his own character and his actions to Himmel. Stark compares himself out of admiration for who he has been told that Himmel is.

I went on that whole explanation because it sort of rubbed me the wrong way that people were willing to entirely disregard Himmel as a character because they automatically went to the most cliche shonen jump plot of stark somehow pulling the sword and being the true hero who would ultimately defeat the big bad guy because that would of been "cool". The whole premise of the series is Himmel being the hero and frieren reflecting upon her life with him while he was going through that journey.

I'm pretty sure the entire point of the sword was to show that Stark is just as much a hero as Himmel is. One of the major points of this story is that time keeps moving. Himmel is the hero of the past who will one day be completely forgotten like the heroes who came before him. Stark not pulling the sword is supposed to show that being a hero has less to do with a prophecy and more to do with self-proclamation.

Adding onto this with my own 2 cents: I think it's also showing us double by having him compare Himmel to Stark's brother instead. He saw his brother as a true hero. While we know Stark holds Himmel in high regard (it would be impossible not to after hearing Eisen's stories among other things), I think Stark probably was thinking more of his brother than Himmel in this scenario. Eisen, Himmel, and Stark's brother are the ones he seems to look up to and admire the most. It's a good lead-in to use that scene to put us in Stark's headspace, imo
