Bit late to the party, but dude's need to drop the DnD references. I get that it's what your most familiar with, but likening it too much is going to cause misunderstandings in your interpretation of what's happening. This world is inspired by DnD, but it's been very carefully crafted by the Author to stand on it's own, and has it's own rules and is a very grounded high fantasy, meaning it also has darker and hard-fantasy elements mixed in. If you must think about it in DnD terms - it's more like everyone is the NPC's of DnD and are therefore can only operate under the rules of that world, even the most powerful beings do not break the world's scaling... Or like the most true to character RP that has ever been.. haha. This series operates well within well established "laws" of it's reality. While they can be bent, they are never broken. And the whole using spell components just does not exist, (unless it's a ritual or special kind of magic). For most magic- the component is just the mage's mana pool and the will/knowledge of how the spell works.. There's no spell slots, just a "pool" of mana that they possess within them, and each casted spell drains it like a liquid or gas directed though a nozzle out of a container... the amount depending on how much strength they make the spell, how much their mana pool is vs the cost of a spell.. etc. Like I'm getting at the fact that there's a much more natural, unmeasurable aspect to this series. Like how you can't put a number beside the actual amount of stamina of a marathon runner irl, or a number beside how thirsty someone is, beyond a guess... same for everything here.
