They must not understand how skilled Thorfinn is even by this point if they don't think thorfinn can bypass all of those soldiers to land a killing blow on canute. He can't fight all of them at once but he is skilled and fast enough to maneuver his way over to canute to kill him before they can attack thorfinn

Although that is trivial and basically nothing to even bring up in terms of all the greatness this episode offers. So its not a big deal at all. Not like thorfinn would do it anyways. Although thorfinn is that capable.

In my mind I see it as while Canute wants to go against God and sees everything in a negative light up until this point its different in Thorfinn's character as, while he doesn't know everything about the bible but listened to its teachings for a while earlier in the season, he is more of an embodiment of God's teachings and what the bible teaches. Its not simply about believing in God but its about the teachings and lessons that can be gathered from it. Thorfinn and Thors embody a lot of what Jesus Christ was and how powerful words can be compared to violence. The power of speaking and discussion with others is a very very powerful asset. Thorfinn is great as a skilled fighter but as he learns his greatest asset is the power to speak to others in a way that violence could never hope to do
