I mean, it doesn't change the fact that he was nice to Einar and Thorfinn and that he didn't want to punish children, but the fact that he's able to get so posessive and merciless towards someone when pressured remains. Somebody like him shouldn't have authority - he should've been whatever Pater was. Less risky, more calm.

And so this episode shows why slavery is so abhorrent: even if Ketil seemed like a ‘nice’ owner, his slaves are still seen as his property, not fellow human beings. He can do whatever he likes to them when he decides to stop being ‘nice’ and the basic human rights to agency and freedom are considered theft.

Are are NO good slave owners. This does an amazing but horrifying job of showing that.

Its been said already but even the "nicest" slave owners are monsters for owning slaves. And all it takes is one thing to break them and take out their frustration and terror out on someone they own.
