Diane gets a decent amount of hate (from some fans) for the direction she went with for the book, and I think it's pretty unwarranted. They agreed to show the truth "warts and all." So that's what she did. The problem that BoJack has with it is that he expected to see himself look good most of the time, with only being an asshole a little here and there. Unfortunately, he's pretty much been an asshole all the time. This really just shows that BoJack has yet to realize/accept who he is.

I agree with most of what you’re saying, but I don’t think Diane is blameless here. The agreement was for her to ghostwrite an autobiography, and the final product is a bit of a departure from what they agreed upon. If someone was supposed to write a book for me, but instead they wrote their own book about me, I’d be a little annoyed.

While I agree that the book was an accurate representation of Bojack and that Bojack should let the book be published, Diane should not have gone behind Bojack's back and leak it to the internet. Bojack made it very clear that he did not like the way he was presented in the book, even if it was totally accurate, and Diane should have respected that and found some other way to convince him or not released the book at all. As Bojack's employee what she did was very unprofessional, and as a friend it was a shitty thing to do.

I hope there's going to be some more exploration of that book later in the story, because it genuinely seems like Diane didn't think her work put Bojack in a role of a douche. I now wonder, if maybe Bojack, being so focused on every bad thing about himself, just straight up ignored all the good things? I need somebody impartial to comment on this book. Maybe Caroline's totally singular boyfriend somehow? And I guess Herb is still alive - maybe him? Oh, Charlotte maybe?

To me, the amount of hate Diane got back when the show was released was very telling. It was apparent to me that the same people who would be overly lenient on Bojack's flaws, were extremely critical and disgusted by Diane's, much less serious, flaws. Like yeah, I think she was reactionary here, impulsive and unprofessional in leaking the chapters. But I believe it stems from a) a bit of misguided innocence, which makes her believe her good intentions are enough to get through to Bojack and let him see this as a good thing; and b) her commitment to her principles, which is simultaneously her biggest virtue and flaw. I think we can admit that she sometimes fucks up while appreciating her character, especially when the show's protagonist is a giant asshole who somehow we still root for. But yeah, I remember the hate she got back in the day was insane.

I watched this series over and over about 20 times and always skipped the first season because compering to the rest of the series it's ... Not good. The directors made a mistake of making the beginning of the series looks like silly cartoon to reach more audience... BoJack horseman is brilliant! It's gets into depth I never seen in any adult animated or filmed done... Your my first and only petreon because you make me appreciate season 1! Your reaction on this is amazing and adds sooo much! Thank you! More please 🙏😅❤️

Totally agree Chiara. I thought it goes without saying, but no character in this show is "perfect." They all have flaws, they all make mistakes, they're all quite human in their character writing. I won't go into specifics about anything that happens later, but there are certainly a specific kind of people in the audience that will latch onto the relatively minor things Diane does wrong and turn them into reasons to capital H "hate" her character, all the while making excuses for every horrible thing BoJack does (and will do). I think it's fine to disagree with Diane's choices here, but they aren't hate-worthy in the slightest. BoJack surely could have asked at any point to see how the book was coming along and yet seemingly didn't bother to read a single page of it until it was finished. He didn't want to be involved. He claimed ignorance in order to not involve himself in the writing process. All things considered, it's a grey area at worst.

I think I'll just stop trying to get into Bojack. and it's not even the art - I had a hard time getting into One Piece, because One Piece looks ugly, but I finally did get into One Piece and I'm happy. Ditto Naruto, and Steven Universe (both Naruto SU look very ugly, though I do prefer early ugly Naruto to later bland Naruto, by faaar, but I'm a weirdo who thinks SDC is prettier than JJL). But Bojack, I think I wouldn't like Bojack even if it wasn't ugly. No offence, as I've said above, I like some ugly looking canons, too. But just. Other stuff... EVEN getting into Odd Taxi was easier for me.... I guess I'm just not the target audience. nvm, ignore my comment. XD anyway, the bros' discussion is good, I wish I was into this. :(
