Yeah, this movie does a bad job at "selling" the budding romance between Shirou and Sakura. It's something that could have been handled so much better in a TV anime format, with more room for Shirou introspection that the visual novel is notorious for. Unfortunately, it's just one of those things that has to be chalked up to bad movie adaptation, especially when this route already has so much else going on at the same time. I'm still sort of salty that UBW got 25 episodes while HF, the most important route in the VN that provides all the answers (the "Deep Lore" if you will), got crammed into what, 18 episodes or so, equivalent. But I digress. However, Caleb does bring up a valid point that they did spend almost two years together before the War started. Regardless of what opinions you may hold on "off-screening" the development between Shirou and Sakura, that is not a insignificant amount of time to spend together, and it's absolutely believable that romance would develop between two teenagers who saw each other almost every day for that long. Well, that's it for my thoughts on this one. I am looking forward to your reaction and discussion for the third movie, because on one hand, I am super excited, but at the same time, worried that the ending is not gonna land very well for you guys. This time, it won't be just something that can be chalked up to bad adaptation. Although, in the discussion, Caleb did say in simple terms that it's ultimately just about if Sakura wants to keep on living or not, so I think it will be fine. I think. On a final note, although I don't think you personally look through your comments section, it would be interesting nonetheless to see your thoughts on what the main theme of each route was supposed to be, according to the creators: Fate route: "Oneself as an ideal" UBW route: "Struggling with oneself as an ideal" HF route: "The friction between the real and the ideal" (source: https://www.comipress.com/article/2006/06/30/386.html)

The reason why Saber is able to be used is because she was absorbed while still being alive which is why True Assassin said, "So you've decided to confront your dark side." or whatever he said. Saber Alter is basically what she would be like as a more tyrannical and cold-hearted King due to All The Worlds Evils corrupting her Spirit Core. The whole thing with Shinji stems all the way back to Shinji's uncle Kariya dying while trying to save her. Basically, she has given up all hope of resistance against Zouken. Shinji actually used to treat her nicely as a proper "big brother" but started resenting her as she inherits the teachings of Matou and he can't use magic. Her low self-esteem basically convinces herself that the changes in Shinji are her fault so she accepts everything he does to her.

Man, this trilogy is so cool. All in all, I'd say it does a decent job of content condensation for the sake of adapting. A lot of what would be monologe in the VN gets translated to subtext of camera work, visuals, sound cues, and emotional gesturing. Having knowledge of the source, it's really quite a wonder just how much they actually managed to get across. IIRC, Heaven's Feel is the most content rich route, mostly because they had to condense the ill-fated Ilya route and roll it into the Sakura route last minute, so the whole story is a little jumbled to begin with. The spectacle is more than enough to come back for, but having just a lovely compliment to a rich set of on-screen adaptations makes me so happy to see.
