I absolutely love this season for starting out slow and casual for the first 4 episodes and then ramping up all at once in episode 5.

Correction: Myulan's barrier also makes it impossible to use magic outside of your body, meaning that spellcasters like Shuna can't use magic anymore. So it's not only communication. It's all magic that's nullified by Myulan's barrier.

Addition to that, this means Myulan, as pure spell caster, is also completely defenseless. Meaning it is a defacto death sentence, she is exposed as an enemy spy behind enemy lines without any way to defend herself. Clayman basically told her to commit suicide if she doesn't want Youm to die.

Additional Clarification: While she did cast the Anti-Magic Barrier at Clayman's order she is the actual caster, not Clayman. When Myulan was introduced she called herself a Wizard; while not gone over in the anime, in the light novels it is explained that Wizard is a title only earned by those casters that master three or more styles or branches of magic. As such Myulan has the knowledge and power necessary to cast the spell herself.

Since we are at it, additional information about Myulan that the anime doesn't go over: She was originally human witch, she fled persecution and secluded herself in her research never interacting with anyone be they human or monster. When she reached the end of her life span she had some slight sense of regret due to not having made satisfactory advance in her research, nor having a successor and wondered if her life had been wasted. That is when Clayman came and offered her "eternal time and a young body that will never age" in exchange for her swearing her allegiance to him, she took the offer not knowing that it would mean falling victim to Caymans "Marionette Heart" and therefore become incapable of ever defying him (without losing her life). Also, she actually spends some month traveling with Youm and the rest of his crew. It looks like her meeting Youm to now sacrificing herself to protect him from Clayman all happened in the span of like a week because she was only introduced this season, she should have actually made contact with Yomu back in Season 1 once Millim leaves tempest.
