It's great writing but god Vi could've probably gotten through to Powder if the Firelights hadn't showed up. My heart just can't deal.

While this may have been true I like this version of the story where she doesn't. When things change, reverting them back to the way they use to be will still never make it the same as it was the first time. That is to say even if she was able to 'bring back Powder' they would never be the same as before their separation.

It's not about "bringing back" powder. It's about Vi accepting to love Jinx for who she is, and Jinx tries to ask for this over and over, even here, she nervously mentions "things changed, I changed", and of course in later episodes it becomes more prevalent. We think it's all about Vi getting through, when Vi is the one whose actually dense-powder is gone but Jinx wants her sister and all Vi does is bang on the door like "hello is Powder in there?" and Jinx is like "Yes, I'm here!" and Vi is like "But powder?" See how awful this must feel for Jinx?

The type of painting Medarda uses is called Tempera, where you take an egg yolk and mix it with pigment (although here it's done a little innaccurately since she doesn't separate the egg and the yolk). It was pretty common back in the renaissance :D!
