I wouldn't say it's so much that Kuwabara is unlucky in a lot of his fights against unknown abilities, it's more that he's predictable because of his emotional and sometimes reckless way of fighting. Like in his last fight Kuwabara was provoked and then basically just ran into the cape of no return.

I was trying so hard not to spoil this episode when you guys watched the previous episode and had your worries about her being able to keep up. I wanted to just yell out "The only way that demon could possibly win is if it used no powers at all and just kept using the sword to brute force her. The moment he decided to use spiritual abilities it was game over. Genkai is a hard counter to all spiritual powers!"
