You could look for the full explanation about the ending on youtube since the actual untold story, hinted here and there , was super deep.

I really love the callbacks to the puberty syndrome cases in S1... they had him go through what both Mai and Futaba went through (invisibility and doppelganger). But yeah, this movie was absolutely heartwrenching, and very well done.
