Great reaction! There's something I'd like to add though. Technically speaking, Yui had the whole 1st year of HS to try and approach Hachiman directly by herself without literally anyone's interference. Yet she just gave candy to his sister in hope he would eventually approach her. Also I feel that her main issue right now is that she is still trying to please everybody, even if her own happiness gets jeopardized. I'd say her problem right now is not that different than the problem she had with Yumiko Miura early in S1. Iroha pointed it out in this episode and she took issue with it as it gets referenced in the after credits scene.

That was way different though. She hadn't actually met him; he was still just the dude who saved her dog. A big part of the drama in late season 1 was about Hachiman thinking that was the only reason she was interested in him.

I feel like the "environmental" factors Jacob was talking about are themselves representative of the dynamic of the characters. Yui perhaps doesn't get as much time alone with Hachiman because she doesn't go looking for it enough. She holds back not only during their actual alone time, but also in the amount of time she's willing to spend alone with him. She sees his reluctance and understands the complications that it would lead to, so she doesn't go out of her way to generate those intimate scenarios. As a result, the extra variables that come in from outside can feel like they're carrying more weight. But this is extremely realistic. I've been in the same situation countless times (as I'm sure everyone has), where I've had my chances to create those sorts of moments for myself but been too reticent, and eventually things come in from the outside and I lose my opportunity. The world continues to turn regardless of what we're doing ourselves. In the end, the environment really hasn't been generous to either character. In fact, Yukino barely gets any time alone with Hachiman if you look at it. But from what we've seen so far, they've made much more progress in those intimate moments than Yui has, probably because of their connection. That's just the nature of romance.

Ixiataaga

This entire discussion is about a fanboy who is tilted and fuming that his favorite girl is prepped for failure when the plot armor is strong and declares all external forces in the story are working against her.

Fyelah Project

That's a little much. To an extent, he's right that Yui is getting the short end of the stick when it comes to luck and circumstance. Some of it is the result of her own selfishness, but even that is because of her self-awareness and the difficulty of this situation. I think that makes her likeable and makes me understand Jacob's love for her, even if I do find Hachiman's relationship with Yukino more compelling. One way or another, it's not stopping the bros from properly unpacking a lot of the important subtext the story has to offer, so don't get on his ass about having an opinion.

The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements. Energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest. -- Citizen G'Kar, Babylon 5 Just seemed appropriate at the beginning.

funnily enough, this episode featured all of Hachiman's "harem" in one room. Strictly on technical terms obviously seeing as how their relationships with him are varied and complex, but if this show were following standard harem romcom patterns, every single one of those girls (and 2 dudes) would have been a love interest.
