This is going to be long because I feel the need to explain a few things about the Hakone Ekiden that I think you’ve missed. No spoilers, just info about the race itself. But before my long-winded explanation, I want to tell you how much I am enjoying your reactions to what has become one of my favorite anime. I enjoy you reaction and discussion for every anime, but this one is really close to my heart. First, a reminder that there are 21 teams in the Ekiden (when Haiji talks about the starting point he says 21 runners will start the race, so 21 teams -btw the real Ekiden has 20 teams. I don’t know why the show adds one more). Ten teams are composed of the ones who made it in the top ten in the previous year’s Ekiden and so are “seeded” for the next year’s race. They are exempt from the qualifier. Another ten teams (9 in real life) are chosen based on their times at the qualifier. The qualifier was the 20 kilometer run that was last episode. One more team is the “Student United” (used to be called “Select”) team which is made up of the top individual runners from universities that didn’t qualify in the 20 km run. [The anime doesn’t talk about the SU team probably because they don’t want the audience to realize that (in real life) Kakeru would have been able to qualify and run the Ekiden as part of the SU team even if the rest of his team didn’t make it.] Second, I noticed last episode that you mentioned Kansei’s time is not that far off from the top spot so they are doing pretty well. And while it is VERY impressive how they were able to qualify with a mostly amateur team, keep in mind that they are the worst of all 21 teams. They barely made it. The top ten seeded teams are generally exponentially better than any of the ones trying to qualify in the 20 km run- these are the elite schools who usually qualify for a seed year-to-year and thus scout the best runners in the nation. These are also the schools whose students are competing on a national level to represent Japan in the Olympics and other international competitions. While the schools may get better or worse due to their roster changing when students graduate, generally the seeded teams are on a significantly different level than the other half of the competition. Also, it is reasonable to assume all the other teams have alternates available if a member is injured. Sakaki points this out to them this episode. As long as the alternates qualified for the individual qualification they are okay to be a substitute if necessary. Kansei has 10 runners and that is it. If one of them is injured or sick or just can’t complete their leg that is the end for them. The whole team is done and disqualified. This makes the pressure on each runner in Kansei so much worse. This is why the twins are so discouraged: they finally realized just how impossible it will be for their team to place first. Not only that, there is a legitimate chance that Kansei won’t even be able to compete or complete the race.
