Alliance and Imperial territories are on two different arms of the Galaxy. Iserlohn and Fezzan corridors are the only 'safe and navigable' paths between the two arms. The unnavigable areas could be due to radioactive star clusters similar to one in Battlestar Galactica where we lost one of the pilots. Or other things such as irregular gravitational fields and red Giants. The way I see it, the corridors were added for the geopolitics of the story. But I agree with you guys, all that science fiction stuff isn't as important as the show is primarily a space opera.

Btw. most of the times Batman beats the likes of Superman(except for kryptonite), Wonder Woman or Green Lantern is heavy plot induced stupidity in play, and while Lex isn't as bad he is definitely not the only(or even most effective) counter to Supes. Justice League villains like Darkseid(too powerful in general) or Despero(too telepathically powerful), but also villains of other JL-members like Zoom(a Flash villain who is simply too fast for Supes) or Circe(a Wonder Woman villain who is simply too magical + powerful for Supes) are worse for Supes most of the time. Comic nerd-time end ;).
