This episode was really painful. The way Sukeroku tells Kiku he was just a stray dog Yakumo took in... There were subtle hints in the beginning where you could see child Sukeroku insisting on being taken as an apprentice and getting in Yakumo's face so to speak. It must have been ereally hard to see his efforts not acknowledged and taken into account. But it is also true he has the seeds of self destruction within himself and Kiku didn't know how to help. As for the "yakumo" title, that is passed on from generation to generation, from one yakumo to another like some sort of a clan leader's name. Even today, there are traditional theatre performers that go by a certain name they inherit from the previous generation. I can understand Caleb saying he loves these characters, but cannot handle the drama, but I prefer this to the forced drama and bad characterization we find all too often in fiction these days. Rakugo Shinjuu hurts because it feels genuine and real, you understand these characters and you empathize with them in a way very few TV shows or pieces of fiction can elicit from the audience. You can see the beauty of a flawed humanity that is also striving to keep an art form alive and the sacrifices that requires. It is as much about art as it is about being human. And I will forever love SGRS for that.
