Spoiler: saddest part is that if Ippo didn't get scared/confused and noticed he was actually doing damage, he probably would have won.

I think one of my favorite parts about this episode is that it kinda shames the crowd (and by proxy the audience) for cheering Ippo past his limits into danger. We love Ippo and because of that want him to win, but at the end of the day its more important that he survive and live to fight another day.
