About the key: what you know (from just the anime) is the key was the one that Sister Crone promised to give them so they could access the medical supplies. One minor detail from the manga that was left out is that it's actually a skeleton key for the entire house. I think the implication (this is just my head-cannon) is that the kids were using it secretly, over the course of the two months, to steal supplies from places that were normally locked up.
