What is the appeal of this show? Humor, action? I see laughter. This is the only day of the week I don't watch. In the mood to be shilled.

the name mentioned on the record is the "ill-mannered prince", the player he defeated in the semi-finals. The flashback is placed between nikaidou's defeat and the finals

I watched 13 episodes when season 1 was airing and I simply could not get into it. It felt like a cheesy, slow melodrama. If it had more of the seinen approach of Rakugo I would totally recommend it, but this felt "meh".

It's a rollercoaster of frustrating moments and uplifting moments. Which is the kind of concoction of emotions that perfectly captures the story of a boy's depression and the slow attempt to heal that depression. For my money, it is the most honest and accurate portrayal of the struggles and joys of human life ever portrayed in anime. Okay, maybe second to Evangelion but it has a far more approachable narrative.

The animation in the show is absolutely beautifull. It's a pretty chill show, with a very likeable, but monologue-heavy main character. It's not for everybody, but its worth giving a shot

Tsujii-san! the 9-dan with the unbearable puns haha

to add on to what others have said: it's also got beautiful music; an incredibly wholesome, lovable, and adorable family of 3 sisters who love and support our MC (for whom alone it's worth starting the show tbh); some dark moments hinting at depression and bullying and much more - all disguised as a show ostensibly about a boy playing shogi. It's about growing up, learning to trust others and have others trust in you. Be warned: it's a slow burn show, but the payoff is completely worth it (as the Bros are finding out in S2, which is one of my favourite seasons of anime ever). SoL + drama + sports anime + comedy, a character-driven show that I couldn't adore more if i tried.💖
