SOS Bros React - Nisemonogatari Episode 8 - The Toothbrush...

This takes the cake. I don't think either of us have ever experienced something so uncomfortable and at the same time so hilarious. Time to see how Monogatari (in classic fashion) turns this into a mind-blowing moment of characterization and development. They really have their work cut out for them with this one. Oh boys. I have been waiting for this day ever since Monogatari won its poll!

cringe thursday.

Fun fact, Nisemonogatori was basically Nisioisin's personal fanfiction that he didn't originally intend to have published. It's why Nise is the most sexually-charged season of Monogatori.

after I first saw this (I was already aware of the infamous scene, but had no context until I watched the episode) I was similarly put off a little, I ended up finding some analyses of the episode which helped though. One thing that helped was viewing the entire episode from a more meta perspective, instead of taking the troublesome implications of the events seriously

Nisioisin is a genius, period.

Not even half as incestuous as No Game No Life

You have pasted through the fire that is "The Toothbrush Scene" Also for contest on the Sun and Moon thing, the 'Tsuki' part of Tsukihi's name means moon.

My first time watching this show, I had the same reaction toward that scene, but I had a different approach to this show. I did not think too deeply ecchi scenes so I can forget and somewhat enjoy the cringe from it. I think the reason why it feel so cringy is on purpose. I think the makers of the show wanted you to feel the same feeling Karen is feeling. At least that is my excuse, for not minding it as much.

Random personal anecdote: I was once recommended Murakami's short stories as a way to get into his novels, and I ended up not liking most of them (in The Elephant Vanishes to be specific) but that is not the point per se. The point is that Murakami sometimes put a random sexual act in the middle of a conversation or other mundane activities, and some people praised that as creative and and brilliant. And in the midst of my frustration with Murakami's shorts (this was long after Nise aired), I had an epiphany: being a "sex scene" without any actual sex, the toothbrush scene is much more creative than any "fanservice" I've seen from Murakami! At that moment, I saw Nise, something that I didn't think much of before, in a new light.

Caleb's devil's advocate work in the discussion killed me. I lost all semblance of stoicism as soon as it started.

He says this about all of the monogataris btw. he writes them all for himself primarily
