LIES!! Chika is a false prophet! Do not fall for her alligator gifts!

Appropriate attire, because Kaguya would not have understood that shirt... at the beginning of the episode, at least.

Connor Brown

You Boys were not ready for that ED, but I was not ready for that shirt!! I gotta go back and watch that fanmail unboxing I guess.

Chika best girl

Lavatea

It's just that I don't like the tsundere type girls but, when done to other type of characters, like shirogane here or veldora, it's so much better.

Remember that A1 Pictures only hires freelancers, they don't have a constant stable of animators, which is why their animation doesn't really have any consistent quirks or tendencies, like any other studio. For Kaguya specifically, there's a fairly large presence of former Shaft alumni, which may explain the impressionistic and experimental nature of some of the art cuts. Something like putting a Yeti barely in frame when talking about someone named Yeti in order to add a level of surrealism to Kaguya's rare trip outdoors would be very characteristic of Shaft animation, for example. The Chika Dance, on the other hand, was specifically done by Naoya Nakayama, a former KyoAni alumni, with the help of rotoscoping to get the motions so realistically fluid. His experience with KyoAni's characteristic perfectionism (and obsession with dance sequences) probably contributed to how he designed the sequence.

thanks for the info! I was wondering why this A1 adaptation seemed to be so great compared to some of their other works. This also lines up with the mass Shaft staff exodus from a year ago or so. Do you know by chance where some of the other Shaft alumnis went ?

Raymond Throne

Couldn't say, though it's pretty likely they transitioned to being freelancers. Due to increased demand for Japanese animators from oversea markets in China and independent video distribution platforms in the states (Netflix and such), freelance work has become substantially more profitable for established animators in the industry than staying as part of a specific part of most animation companies.

There is a 10 hr video of the Chika dance... just saying

Having seen Hinamatsuri and currently watching Kaguya-sama I think they're pretty comparable.
