Zane

it's pretty clear why satsuki has been dropping hints that you two were picking up on

Eyes on the screen Caleb! Jacob can hear you regardless of where you're looking! Also, the translations/dialogue for this episode were so VASTLY better in the official sub. I haven't paid much attention to the subs you guys use while watching alongside you, but holy crap, the ones you're using are REALLY bad, at least for this episode!

Connor Brown

Bois its here. Welcome to Kill La Kill!!

Runaway_Cactuar

Yup, it's about to hit the fan. You think you're ready, but you're not =)

Yeah I watch along on Crunchyroll and the version theyre using's translations have been a little weird here or there in the past, but in this episode multiple sentences and phrases, even conversations were different. It hasn't bothered me before because the context or the intent behind the dialogue was still roughly the same so there wasnt much real difference over all but this episode was something else...

Here are some examples just from the scene before the opening. 1:20 "Breakneck pacing is a hallmark of KILL LA KILL!" "Even our compilations are wrapped up in the teaser!" 1:28 "The tides of war will change drastically!" "But in war, the situation is always fluid!" 1:30 "Ignorant as you are, you stand no chance of victory!" "One such as yourself who is ignorant of everything can never win!" 1:37 "All you've ever done is beat around the Bush! Get off your high horse!" "You bastards with your vague hints think you're such hot stuff!" 1:42 "Screw you Ms. Bigmouth Eyebrows!" "You perpetually frowning, caterpillar eyebrowed bitch!

In regard to the "bath scene," I don't think it's as bad (in universe) as you think it is. The way Crunchyroll translated the water is "medicated bath waters [that] boosts Life Fiber harmonization," and what Ragyo did as a "purification ritual." In Shinto, a purification ritual involves symbolic washing (an interesting side note: it's done before worship, and Ragyo does it before showing Satsuki the Primordial Life Fiber; interesting symbolism there). The plausible deniability of the scene (and what I'm sure Ragyo would have said if anyone had spoken up) is that she was rubbing Satsuki all over because she was washing her. She just so happened to rub certain areas harder than others. Don't get me wrong; the SYMBOLISM there is spot on and I agree with the control metaphor 100%. I'm just saying the actions themselves weren't as wholly sinister/sexual as you seemed to assume.

*SPOILER* It's true that she said Misogi (禊), which is the exact word for the shinto purification ritual but I think she just said that to have an excuse to touch her, in a real Misogi, women wear clothes (a white Kimono) and each person wash their own body, they don't touch other people's. And knowing what is to come (the butt slapping scene, the scene with Nui and Ryuuko...etc) I think it's clear at this point that Ragyo is just a sick fuck horny for power and horny for her own daughter(s).

AardBard

^Not really seeing a problem. Some things are gonna be different with different subs, but nothing in this ep as far as I know was outright incorrect or anything. CR isn't infallible with its translations, either.

*SPOILER* Yeah, I mostly agree with you; the only part where we disagree is that I think it's both—she wanted an excuse to touch her daughter, AND ALSO genuinely did need her to perform the ritual (because at that point in the story, Ragyo still thinks she's grooming Satsuki and is trying to make her a better vessel for the Primordial Life Fiber). In case my point wasn't clear, I was just pointing out to them that there was something BEYOND the sexual side of it. It seemed to me that they only saw the sexual aspect of it and took it as a rape scene (hence the "this scene almost ruined the show for me" comment), missing the parts that were NOT sexual, and I just wanted to point out the other half to them (because honestly, there are a lot of interesting ideas and theories that they could come up with by knowing that, and I'd love to hear them dive into it! =D )

Sharknessa

@AardBard Okay, but other people noticed a distinct qualitative difference. This isn't about whether YOU saw a problem or not. Others, including me, did. "Infallibility" in any particular version isn't anything anyone is talking about. There were differences already pointed out to you. Watch them side by side and the differences are clear. You don't have to agree, but clearly I'm not the only one who feels this way.
