Barnelby was the father of the little girl. Not the boy. There were multiple families and if you look at the photo. The family in the middle owned the main manor. And their photos were all over the house. So it wasn't the orange haired family. Also when you see the bodies his has the same hat from the photo.

about the whole "why didn't they jump down the well" issue I thought they showed that the Apathy Grimm had already cut them off from the well and were blocking them from getting to it. cause there was one shot where it showed Ruby and the gang run into a group of the grimm with what looked like sunlight beaming down on them

It's pretty messed up to think that everyone in that village literally just went to bed, were too lazy to get up, and basically died of dehydration.

They did. That said, the way the shot was cut, you just see the grimm under light. Had they pushed the shot a bit further back it may have been a bit more obvious that the grimm were under the well. But they showed the grimm to show why the team took the route they did.
