It's weird how they changed the waterfall training scene. No future spoilers: In the manga they showed the consequences of Griffith's actions first(seems like they cut that out completely from the anime? Maybe shown later) then went ahead with the tournament where Guts learns that the band are on the run. And then after the reunion they showed what Guts has been up to for the past year so it wasn't as jarring as here. About the training : Guts' sword kept breaking without being able to cut or even deflect the trees, I believe he had a whole bunch of swords with him. He used the tree trunks as a kind of replacement for Zodd. Or at least he imagined what it was like getting hit by him.
