At this point I think you can watch the OVA. There's going to be some pass time scene from the OVA (not sure in which episode) and you can get a grimsp of Chise childhood. It will be wonderful if you guys do the reaction on the OVAs too!

the next episode puts some very prominent time skip scenes of the OVA that don't transition well without the context of watching the OVA's beforehand, so it'd be in your best interests to watch the next 3 OVA episodes before episode 13

As the people before me, i strongly recommend you to watch OVAs now. In worst case scenario you can watch them after episode 13, but they're gonna be relevant in the next one so now is the best moment. I hope some mod will tell you this ASAP!

Well.. if SoS didn't see my comment a few episodes ago about the OVAs, they definitely won't miss out now. XD

When she was flying you looked high guys XDDD yeah it was simply amazing :)

It's a little thing but you should know that traditionally the word 'wand' just means 'stick' or 'staff'. When I first read Harry Potter I was actually really confused when they used their wands because it didn't fit the image I was familiar with XD

Throwing my hat in with all the people saying you should watch the OVAs now. Really good time to watch it.

Oooh, I've waited for this. Just like you said here, ever since you first mentioned wanting Chise to turn into a phoenix, I've been looking forward to seeing your reaction to this. Your discussion in here was so great, I think you said something about almost everything I've been thinking about this episode. About the multiple levels of symbolism, about the build-up for Chise, the importance of choice, etc. I think one of the most important part of this show, like you said, is that Chise isn't really very active in the beginning. And that can turn a lot of people off. I've seen so many people say that Chise is boring. And while I get where they're coming from, I don't agree. Chise is real, in so many ways. As someone who's struggled with mental health (though not even near gone through the shit that Chise has), Chise is a character I connect with. A lot. And to see (or read, in my case) her journey from the beginning to this was absolutely amazing. This story is definitely playing the long game, and it trusts that it will manage to keep the viewers' attention, even with a main character that's a bit passive, so that you can get to this amazing payoff. I really liked The Ancient Magus' Bride before, but I think the part where I started to love it was that conversation with Nevin. That just hit home in so many ways, and the way that he adressed her whole lack of self-worth, her depression, her abandonment, everything... It was so great. And then he helped her, slowly, in trying to look back on her past not only with the trauma in mind, but as a strength, a solid ground for her to stand on. This show also addresses one of my other favorite themes. In many many stories, the strength of the main character is built up on how much they care for others, and how little value they put on themselves. And it's often brought up as a good, admirable thing. It's rare to find stories that point out that devaluing yourself can actually end up hurting those closest to you. It's a theme that helped me a lot as a kid, reading a lot of CLAMP manga (it's a frequent theme there too). So that conversation with Nevin really hit on a lot of those things that I love. And of course, even though you didn't discuss it, another favorite part of mine: Chise remembering something good about her family. Because of her trauma, that's all she's ever been able to remember and focus on. Because something like that would drown out everything else. And she's been left feeling unwanted. But because of her conversation with Nevin she was able to, not really find peace but at least look past that and see that at some point, they were happy. The fact that she can draw from some positive memories in her childhood, and not only the bad ones... That's really powerful. This did in a way feel like a season finale, more than a mid-season one, but even so, I can't wait to get further on as well. Oh, and if you have any interest in seeing the OVAs (which I would really recommend!) a good place to do that would be after episode 13. If you have the time. :) Long comment done. I just had a lot to say, and I love this episode. It got me kind of emotional just watching the reaction... Looking forward to the next one! Take care!
