Rob seems so cheeky...

Nadeem Shaikh

there are 2 tournaments that happen in a year, the current one (the inter high) and the one that happens later in the year, which is the Spring high,

Ousmane Dembele

Kageyama calls Hinata "dumbass" (BO-GEH) cause that's all he heard Iwa call Oikawa. Amazing stuff

Ousmane Dembele

Also, the difference between Kageyama and Oikawa in terms of technical ability is massive. Kageyama is just a crazy talent. If you watch Ukai studying Seijoh (watching the games while having a smoke), he muttered "could it be that this player...". he could tell that Oikawa is not a volleyball "genius", as they say in haikyuu.

5 times rewatch? xD passed that mark agesss ago xD seems every time i watch a episode reaction i go rewatch the seasons again

Lynda Jaeger

Yeah but most third years retire after this tournament to focus on studies.

Lynda Jaeger

Happy that i am a patron to get this episode early...depressed I have to wait another week for the next!

Watched a vid on YouTube with a psychiatrist gives a study of Oikawa's personality. She believed he had a narcissistic personality disorder. It was great.

I can't remember, but do they say that Kageyama doesn't practice a ridiculous amount? Because as we saw in this chapter (I'm going with the cut version in the vid because I haven't seen the whole video recently, so correct me if I'm wrong) they say that Oikawa practiced but it wasn't UNTIL Kageyama appeared that he practiced a lot harder / more. So I always took it as a call back to Daichi's friend saying he practiced longer than everyone else but did he practice as much as he could? Did he really push HIMSELF? It's easier to do more than someone who doesn't do much, BUT to push yourself to do more than yourself, to go to your limit is another. I could be wrong, I know Kageyama is 'talented' but I held the impression that he practiced a lot - because of how he loves volleyball.

I LOVE the background we get on Oikawa and Iwaizumi in this episode! We really get to see why he acts the way he does. I also love the little changes in Tsukki and Kageyama (especially Tsukki). Oh, and another thing: You can generally find roles on each team that's like mom, dad, uncle, kids etc. You know who they are in Karasuno already ;) Iwaizumi is Seijohs mom AND dad (with a little help from "uncles" Hanamaki and Matsukawa). Because well... Oikawa isn't really suited for any of those roles ;P In terms of other sports anime on par with Haikyuu... Nope. Haikyuu is the best in my opinion. I really do like Prince of Tennis though. The characters are great (some of them are really quirky and different) and actually pretty complex. It's really long so I doubt you'll ever react to it but I just wanted to say that it is a really good sports anime :)

I think it's a combination of both. When people refer to Kageyama as "talented," it's more of his hand-eye coordination that makes him so. Sharpening that talent and applying it solely on volleyball probably took him thousands upon thousands of hours. The point where it gets interesting is that if someone else without that "talent" were to practice the same amount, they'd still be great but just not as good as Kageyama IN THAT AREA. They would probably still be able to beat a team with Kageyama on it if they were better at spikes or serves. It all depends on how they spend that training time.

It depends what you're looking for in a sports anime. I see Hajime no Ippo as being more focused on individual power struggle and providing complex short fights that carry the same intensity and hype as the best shounen anime where life or death is on the line. Haikyuu is more about a team effort, with subdued longer fights filled with many smaller moments that all add up.

Shinka

I would recommend SlamDunk, it's one of the classic. While it's a bit old and slow-paced because of it, but I find the energy and humour to be quite similar to Haikyuu.

ryoko

Totally agreed on the difference in skills between kageyama and oikawa. After all "Oikawa Toru is not a genius." Btw, in that scene Ukai was talking about Watari (seijo libero) possibly having an experience/skills as a setter. It is described better in manga.

Paola

Also real quick! When someone is up to Serve, the opposing team is NOT allowed to Block. They are only allowed to receive ;)

Tammi M

Ok that makes sense. I am real leery about the word 'talent' too so to hear it used on Kageyama - I just wanted to make sure that the point is he is good at hand-eye coordination but he HAS trained an awful lot to be freakishly good. Thanks for responding to my comment. :)
