SOS Bros React - HunterxHunter Episode 29 - Cramming For Hisoka's Test

Here's the link to our reaction: https://vid.me/vKTTh Okay, well that was a nice bit of training! Not exactly sure why it's so dangerous and everyone doesn't train like that, but 'tis neither here nor there! They passed Hisoka's test and now get to fight real Nen users! This first one looks pretty generic, but it should be another good introduction to Nen and it's uses. What did you think of the episode? it isn't easy for most people, gon and killua are extremely talented to the point that they probably have the most potential of anyone in the world.

Nathan

You got the false explanation of nen that Wing gave mixed up with the real explanation. The real one was force, act, null etc., not will, or desire or talking about it or whatever.

Silver Bard Games

This arc starts about as slow as I remember. Fortunately there will be some good fights. Just keep powering through and you'll get to some better episodes.

I really enjoyed your chicken metaphor!

OmniOrcus

That feeling of anticipation for when you guys get to this arc's pay off. Why does time have to move so slow! T_T

Anonymous

To be fair, if you guys weren't seasoned shounen veterans and were watching any shounen for the very first time, you would probably notice the "slow" parts less. That said, I'm looking forward to your opinions about the show going forward.

Silver Bard Games

I wasn't going to mention this yet, but you brought up both Jojo and inspirations from other anime. It's funny that you're watching this and Jojo at the same time, because there are a lot of elements of Hunter x Hunter that are heavily inspired by Jojo. However at the rate you are going, you're going to see these things in HxH long before they come up in Jojo. Unrelated side note: You mentioned some scenes in Fate/Stay Night being suggestive. That series is adapted from an adult visual novel and it's sometimes VERY obvious where they cut out a sex scene.

as a binge watcher this is killing me X_ X

Yeah I don't think they're gonna like the show much from now on

Sucks this is weekly

Fawzi Alomari

They enjoyed the hunter exam arc, so I don't think they'll have a problem with the next episodes, considering that they are rich in info and character, I don't personally agree with you.

Clear Lime

Yorknew city arc and the ant arc are the only good parts of this show

Princess Paladin

Zetsu is Null. It's the concealment/suppression power. You should definitely work on memorizing these, they're important. Ten is step one, Zetsu is step two, Ren is step three, Hatsu is step four. Ten is a protective shroud of nen. Zetsu is suppressing your Nen. Ren is a big surge of Nen aura. Hatsu is using that Nen to act. Ten = Shroud. Zetsu = Null. Ren = Enhance. Hatsu = Act. Those are the normal definitions. The "fake" ones that Wing said are actually just a different version of Nen as seen by the Shingen-ryu school that Wing belongs to. It's literally the very thing you were talking about in this about how people can view Nen different ways.

Irenesharda

It's that "not many people use this technique" things you see in shonens. Even though they say that, pretty much everyone you see that they fight from now on, will have this ability.

Princess Paladin

And no, this is not a slow part. It's not generic. Don't worry about it.

With regards to the individual fights with some exposition on the sidelines, I agree with Jacob noting parallels with how Haikyuu utilizes this during their fights/matches in that he conveys how it can be executed well. I also agree with Caleb in that the execution is better when characters from all sides of the fight/matches are well established, which explains why Haikyuu does this so well, and how hunterxhunter might not be able to, given that the enemy is not well established. I'm not quite sure myself if the execution will be done right but I would say it's still very possible HxH can potentially do this right even if the enemy isn't well established depending on other factors that contribute to this part of storytelling. In that sense, I don't believe either of you guys are wrong.

Ryan Pearce

At least HxH has a reason for this in the arena, since the person explaining the events is the ringside commentator.
