Welcome to my brand new course, Neoclassical Metal Music Theory! I'm super excited about this program and the growth it will ignite in your playing (tabs below)
This week we'll cover the first two segments in the course, "The Classical Scale" and "How To Practice Scales." Grab some WAP juice and a snack and LET'S GO!
🛑 THE CLASSICAL SCALE
There's dozens of scales in existence but only one that has the right sound for classical music. I'm talking about the HARMONIC MINOR SCALE. This 7 note series has a special secret. Instead of the typical flat seventh degree in a regular minor, harmonic minor raises the 7th note by one half step. Observe the difference between these scales below:
E-F#-G-A-B-C-D
E-F#-G-A-B-C-D#
The second scale, containing the D# is harmonic minor. This is a BIG deal because of one thing....MAJOR V CHORD
The major V chord changes everything. Here's the difference...instead of a B minor chord (B-D-F#), we get B major (B-D#-F#). This powerful harmonic movement from the V chord B, to the i chord Em is the entire classical sound in a nutshell!
🛑 HOW TO PRACTICE SCALES
Now that we understand that the harmonic minor scale is the engine of classical music in minor keys, let's talk about how to practice your scales. Let's say you have 5 minutes to work on E Harmonic Minor. Step one, fire up this drone backing track
E DRONE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUjoYO6VX_g
Step two, use a metronome or guitar pro as a timing reference point. Set your speed to something slow like 60 beats per minute. Drill the scale as many times as you need to memorize the shape. Every time the metronome clicks, you play a note. Now comes the fun part....improvise using the E harmonic minor scale over the drone. Get creative and allow your ears to guide you. Channel the ghosts of the past and get inspired. Turn out the lights and listen to your inner voice. Connect with each note and make it your own! You could come up with your own lick, or even a riff
Post your feedback in the comments below and stay tuned for the next installment next Monday muhahaha!
