What’s your favorite riff?

Hooks like Crazy Train and Enter Sandman inspired me when I first started handling my hardwood. The roaring thunder of distorted electric guitar, paired with a strong melodic line is truly life changing

I’d imagine the most incredible riffs when going about my day. The music of the spheres resonating in my mind. I couldn’t wait to get home and finger the g string! However, there was a problem that haunted me..

🛑 THE PROBLEM

When I finally got a chance to play with my wood, I just couldn’t seem to find the right notes tho. My lack of training and experience caused me to miss what was right in front of me. A big part of my problem was TRYING TO HARD. Great riffs like Iron Man work because of One key factor….SIMPLICITY

In fact, Iron Man is so simple and catchy, Ozzy Osbourne sang it! My ”music theory for guitarists“, below uses an iconic riff to demonstrate each of the 12 musical intervals. Study the brilliant framework of these sacred phrases. It’s no accident they resonate with our collective consciousness. I eventually started to get better results in my writing by examining what made great riffs work

They primarily use 4 bar phrases to make a short, dramatic statement. A pedal tone, or recurring tonic foundation is always present. Stepwise motion is preferable to large leaps and the list goes on….

🛑 PRACTICE GOAL:

Try playing through each interval riff nonstop for a killer practice routine. Use the guitar pro file or practice track to test your progress!

One riff to rule them all...One riff to find them! Seriously though, I have that issue you describe as I'm trying to create some killer music for my project. I know how to play but yet feel like a deer in headlights when composing. Thanks for all that you do, brother!
