Most of us start with the pentatonic scale when it comes to learning lead guitar. Is that how you started? I used and abused the 5 notes in A minor pentatonic for years before branching out to other scales
In this video you'll learn a different kind of pentatonic scale from Japan. It's called the Hirajoshi scale, spelled C-E-F#-G-B. The scale pattern I use in the tab below covers positions 7-12. A massive span that get's you breaking out of that familiar box and exploring new fretboard real estate
It's helpful to think of this open tuning Koto sound as a chord (Cmaj7b5). C is the root, E is the third, F# is the sharp 4, G is the 5th and B is the 7th
You could also think of the Hirajoshi scale as a Lydian mode sound. C Lydian is spelled C-D-E-F#-G-A-B. The two scales share all primary tones
