Are you comfortable with the notes on the guitar fretboard? The guitar neck isn't as easy to understand as other instruments like the piano. Things don't look the same as you get higher on the neck

John Petrucci of Dream Theater has a trick to decode the SHAFT and make playing with your WOOD easier

If you start on the 5th fret of the low E string, you're playing an "A" note. Locate an octave up from that note on the 7th fret of the D string. Next, find another octave up on the 10th fret of the B string

Make a fun sequence from this concept by playing frets 5-7-8 on the low E string. Shift this 3 note sequence through all 3 octave starting points we discussed

If you can do that, you can DOMINATE the fretboard. I've attached a lick below for you to practice this concept. Don't think about each note you're playing...just focus on the octave locations
