When it comes to replicating the classical sound in metal music, it's all about one scale. The harmonic minor scale. This is by far the most used scale by modern neoclassical giants. The reason it's so crucial in achieving the neoclassical sound is because of the raised 7th degree. 

In the case of A harmonic minor, you'd have the notes (A-B-C-D-E-F-G#). The raised 7th degree or "leading tone" is what creates tension, enabling satisfying resolution within the style. 

I've included all 7 modes of the A harmonic minor scale below. This maps out the entire fretboard using the 3 note per string system. Each scale has it's own unique sound. Find your favorites and write some music!
