Modal Interchange is when you pedal a tonic note, let's say the note A....then you change chords on top of that A pedal to reflect different scales. For instance, A-B with an A drone in the bass register would produce an A Lydian sound. Am and Dm over an A bass note would produce and A Aeolian sound. Shifting back and forth between modes like this without changing the A pedal tone is the essence of modal interchange. It's identical to Joe Satriani's "Pitch Axis" concept. 

It's incredibly power when composing to create a fresh sound with otherwise unrelated chords. Tab and video below
