Today's Shred Tip is Evil Blues. In this 12 bar blues etude, I target the b5 degree of the E blues scale or Bb note. It's often referred to as the "blue note." Who's your favorite blues guitarist? There's also contrary motion, shuffle patterns, chromaticism and hybrid picking to check out. I love the blues because it's an open musical structure. You can pretty much get away with anything as long as you use a swing rhythm and acknowledge the primary chords (E-A-B). So get on down to the crossroads and sell your soul like Robert Johnson did (pictured above).

One of my favorite jazz guitarists is Marc Ribot. He played on Tom Waits’ Rain Dogs, and the solo from “Jockey Full of Bourbon” is exquisite. He does blues, but he mostly plays latin style jazz.
