Here's a the complete clip for how I colored the Buddha statue in the 3rd chapter. This one is pretty sped up so I'll include a breakdown.

First I do a traditional pencil rendering of the Buddha statue. I scan it in, up the contrast, and erase to make it as clean as I can without loosing detail. 

Then I insert it into the page and clean it up a bit more. Then change the pencil lines to a different color to blend it in with the environment. 

After all that comes the digital painting! I used Kyle's watercolor brushes for photoshop and start to add in the highlights and shadows. The pencil drawing makes things a lot easier, I don't have to worry about the details and can just focus on lighting. 

After everything s rendered I add a watercolor mask for texture and it's done! :D

I've been using this technique ever since the horse statue and have really loved how it turned out! The trick is to make the pencil drawing really good and clean.
