There was an unlikely star in this episode… and it was REM. Rem was honestly so cute and showing so much devotion to Misa, willingness to protect and ensure her safety regardless of the consequences was adorable and made Rem such a good character in my eyes… regardless of being a Shinigami

V, you're thinking one dimensionally. Anyone can be pushed to this extreme IF they were Light. Light's IQ is extremely high, so he already knew that he was more capable than others before he got the death note. Then a magic ability to 'fix the world' fell into his lap. But he is not manipulative because of these reasons. Light's character growth has become this way BECAUSE this ability is under threat of being taken away by L discovering him. He's backed into a corner so he is getting more and more self-preserving which always leads to the cost of the lives around you. For example, someone who believes they are more valuable than others is being chased by a bear along side another person, they could potentially trip the other person so that they can survive another day. Light is desperate to defeat L. His belief that he was chosen by fate to 'fix the world' is on the verge of being shattered. He has killed so many people that killing anyone has lost meaning. Its as easy as breathing to him. Light believes no one matters more than him right now. This is how many people see themselves. "If they would do what I'd say, their lives would be better" is a common thought process of people of all kinds of status. You say a lot of people with power don't act like this, which isn't exactly true. Most people with power worked to achieve that power so they value the experience and journey and growth that got them there. Light was given god-hood by random chance (a similar person in IRL might be a nepo-baby or a trust fund brat). Plus, most people with power do, in fact, have a very strong self-preservation behavior except, unlike Light, they focus that self-preservation into building a legacy by creating a family. When being pushed to lose that power, they will use others in order to protect their family from living a lesser quality of life. Its the same thing. They believe only they are capable of giving their family a good life, Light believes only he is capable of 'fixing the world'. Everyone/anyone will be sacrificed if they get in the way or happened to be near by for the sake of self-preservation. The difference is that most people are never threaten that much mostly because their power isn't that wide-spread like Light's. Light holds dominion over life and death, most people that have something similar are subject to a check and balance system. Because no one person should have that much power, solely. I don't have sympathy for Light. If he was as smart (or wise rather) as he thinks he is, then he should have seen how this would change him. Old saying, 'those that live by the sword, die by the sword'. Even older saying, 'hoisted on his own petard'. Its hubris. You will met your fate by the same fate you have chosen for others. When you decided to weigh your value as greater than others, someone will weigh theirs as greater than you; 'you have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting'. 'There's always a bigger fish'. 'Check yourself before you wreck yourself'. FAFO. Lol. Tons of sayings pointing to the same thing, the same lesson. Learn humility before its too late. If the decision making ability of god-hood fell into your lap, without having to do anything to achieve it, but you were still as vulnerable to harm as any other human. You isolate yourself to protect your own life because if you didn't, life would be worse. And you valued yourself as more capable than others before you were handed the powers of a god, you could've followed a similar path. The exception for you, V, which is the same exception for me, is that you were born weaker than others (as in the issue with your lungs). You, me, and others born with difficult health hurdles to overcome learned humility at a much younger age than most. We wouldn't become Light because we wouldn't have started killing criminals in the first place. We know the value of second chances. Light was gifted with intelligence, a financially stable family/home life, and probably great genes. Presumably, his struggles up to now have been 'first world problems' level only. HOWEVER, under the right set of sequential conditions, even we could reach where Light is now. It would take severe traumatic events, torturous even, over and over and over again, for us to get there, though.

the lifespans are written in a shinigami language so even though humans can see lifespans, they'd have to learn shinigami writing, otherwise they don't know people's lifespans
