Beware the bananas.

Vee, I agree with you. Gelus's story is poetic and tragic. At the same time, it's touching, sad, profound. Also, there is beauty in this story.

When I heard Gelus, my brain immediately linked his name with "gelo" ("ice" in Portuguese). Also, the Latin word "gelu" means "frost," "cold," and "ice." I think everyone whose mother tongue is a Latin language made the same link. Keep that in mind. But, when you linked Gelus with "jealous," I thought: probably they intentionally did this. After watching your reaction and your comment in the end, I rewatched this part of the episode, and here are my thoughts:

In a few minutes, the anime goes deeply into the reflection of real love versus fake love. Gelus saved Misa from a jealous, cold, selfish, and sick man. And to do that, he sacrifices himself and gives his lifetime to Misa. Despite his name, Gelus was a Shinigami with a warm heart and altruistic feelings, and he felt a deep and genuine love for Misa. He was not cold, and, above all, he was not jealous. Gelus admired and loved Misa purely and selflessly, expecting nothing in return. The man who tried to kill Misa, on the other hand, truly had the characteristics that we associate with the Gelus' name. He approaches Misa on the street at night when no one is around with a knife in his hand. He says he "loves" her more than anyone else in the world, always *watching her*, and wants to "protect" her forever. When Misa turns him down, the man says: "Then, if I can't have you [Misa] ... I'll kill us both!". These are actions and words of a cold (he planned the action) and a jealous man driven by a sick desire for possession and control, not love. What Gelus has on his name, the man has on himself. In my opinion, this was purposeful to lead us to a powerful reflection on the meaning of love. In a few minutes, the anime reminds us there is no room for jealousy, suspicion, possession, and control in all kinds of love. Gelus' tragedy was poetic. A simple but profound, sad, touching story. Really one of the best episodes so far.

P.S. Some people might say that it's expected to be a little jealous in relationships in some situations. A harmless jealousy. That would be a conversation for another time and in another place. Just one thing. Regarding love, whatever type it may be (between parents and children, siblings, friends, couples, etc.), one thing is essential: mutual trust. And (sorry for adding LOL) a message to everyone from the bottom of my heart: Start by loving you without arrogance. Don't look for perfection; it doesn't exist. Accept yourself as you are (without arrogance, LOL). Don't diminish yourself, don't be so hard on yourself. It sounds cheesy, but it's the purest truth. Love yourself! ❤️ Then, you will be able to be loved (the real love). 🥰
