This episode does a good job of highlighting the difference between Korra’s relationship with Asami and her relationship with Mako. Mako questions both women at every turn, while they’re completely in sync with each other without speaking. Korra has no problem sniping back and forth with Mako, but the minute Asami gets upset she is quick to apologize and try to smooth things over. Fun fact: Asami changed her car from her usual red and black motif to blue and brown.

The recap episode coming up was necessary in the sense that it saved half the studio their jobs. Midway through production, Nick decided that they were cutting the budget by one episode, but still wanted the same number of episodes to be made as agreed upon. The creators were faced with a choice: fire a bunch of people early, or do a clips episode (since they wouldn't even have the budget for new animations ala Ember Island). They went with the latter. It was originally going to be about Kuvira's backstory--how she was abandoned as a child, her fraught relationship with Su Yin's kids, etc. in order to give more context for why she acts as she does.

Kuvira's backstory would have been interesting. Certainly better than what we get. But given the reasons behind it, can't hold it against them.

something i always think abt in this episode is why bolin didn’t just earthbend a tunnel underground to get around the checkpoint… i know the there wouldnt be that fight but still! i feel like going underground is so OP and people hardly ever do it
