A great thing to notice in this episode is that Republic City has become more sided with benders as time has gone on. The current council seems to be made up entirely of benders but the council from the flash back clearly has at least 2 non-benders on it, with Sokka himself leading it. Amon is not wrong on that point at least, Republic City has become unbalanced.

This show was made when the love triangle trope was everywhere. Also, Aang (an airbender) had kids with Katara (a waterbender) and they got a non-bender (Bumi) and a waterbender (Kya) before having Tenzin. Tenzin’s chances of having airbender kids with Lin was less than 50% because they could be an earthbender like Lin, airbender like Tenzin or a non-bender, while his chances with Pema are 50% because it’ll either be an airbender or a non-bender & he’s got to make sure an entire nation lives on.
