Since you mentioned a lack of strong, well protrayed teenage girls in media, I wonder if you’ve seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That show started the teenage urban fantasy genre but is a lot better than most of what came after, especially in its character development. I’m currently on my third or fourth rewatch and love reactions of people seeing it for the first time. It really holds up well after over twenty years because of its strong writing and performances.

When you talked about feeling uncomfortable from identifying with Korra, I experienced something similar with a different show. I was embarrassed and uncomfortable when I first watched Napoleon Dynamite. I identified too hard with the unpopular picked on nerd kind of demographic from when I was in high school, and I couldn't enjoy the movie at all. Once I had gone through that from the first watch, I was able to watch it again later and enjoy the humor.
