Yay!! Going to grab some coffee and check this out! Best Monday ever :-)

Chris (darkwater)

How about that as a cliffhanger huh? :D

Lima Bravo

For the end of season 2 occasion, here are some notes from R. Moore and D. Eick bluray commentary for this episode. - Moore's commentaries are podcasts released on the internet the same day of the original airing of each episode. I will put these notes in the reply below to shorten this comment. And, thank you Xander!

Lima Bravo

Moore and Eick use this episode to propose McDonnell's performance for an award. This pointing that showrunners do have a strong hand into who gets nominated. Special mention given to Callis being a very joyful guy, a hugger, and yet being asked to portait a darker toned Gaius for these episodes. Eick thinks Callis is a unique and very knowledgeable actor. Gaius was originally envisioned to be more serious, but Callis acting during the miniseries made the writters change the character afterward to fit Callis funnier acting style. Moore was much in 'ah' with Stockwell's acting, his great facial expressions and his impeccable, synchonized tempo and perfect motions, when bouncing his dialog back to himself as the two Cavil Cylons in the brig. Special mention for Hatch being very invested and receptive playing Zarek beside fears of the contrairy because of his past reticence towards this BSG re-imagining. Another special mentions to Park and her improvment and dedication in her roles since S1, as well for Helfer which they had to battle hard the Scifi network execs to accept her as an 'unproven' actress. They said Sackhoff constantly laugh during episode first readings. They also said that costumes, art and set designers do magic with pretty much little to no budget. These episodes' Caprica scenes are action oriented while the show is not intented to be. Moore do not like writting action scenes; he finds them too technical to describe and lacking passion. Outdoor filming was done in Canada's Vancouver outskirts which is basically the same location (with different hue filters applied to the scenes) they use to make us believe to be Caprica (burnt orange), New Caprica (washed blue-grey) and Kobol (lush green). The one year gap and Lee's weight gain are big gambles from the showrunners, fearing the fans' reactions for 'drama boosting' effect. The international syndication version of this episode runs for 43 min instead of 67 min, rendering the story almost incomprehensible. Scenes cut include Cally/Galen and Saul/Helen. What was cut for all versions is showing us that Helen agreed to stay on Galactica for a year before settling on New Caprica. Writters had material for 2 hours for this episode, same for "Pegasus" that could have been a two parters and "Resurrection Ship" could have had a part 3. At this point, when this is originally aired (March 10 2006), they have embryonic ideas and script first drafts of S3 Ep 1-2 and not much behond. S3 Ep 1-2 first aired on October 6 2006. S2 final concepts were beginning to take shape after Ep 11. I refrain from posting other commentary to avoid any potential spoilers but let's just say some actors are being offered permanent position or recurrences for S3 after their S2 performance. Lastly, Baltar's self portait now hangs in Moore's office.

Well, the next season is the season with the most plot twists in the whole show, surprises and more surprises.

DarkVader

That chewing gum in your gears means you are sooooo onto something ... just can’t grasp it yet. Season Three! Season Three! Season Three! Thank you Xander!

Anonymous

FYI - while not absolutely necessary to the plot, there is a series of webisodes that kind of act as an "Episode 0" leading into season 3. Also. Dee isn't just "working with" Apollo, she is the Pegasus XO. Same for Helo on Galactica - he has taken over XO duties there. Updated Cylon model listing: one: Cavil two: Leoben three: D'Anna four: Simon five: Doral six: Six (obviously) eight: Sharon/Boomer

Bubba Fett

Last couple of episodes you had little comments here and there regarding future that made me smile knowing what was coming. Hard not to say anything and give away spoilers. The Cabot reveal was my favorite part of this episode, he has a unique personality compared to the other cylons.

Chris (darkwater)

If nothing else, BSG is a series that will show you the consequences of people's actions. :)

And now, to get the authentic experience, you have to wait 7 months to start season 3. LOL Thank you, Xander!

funnylilgalreacts

I made the mistake of watching it the next day, and I didn’t realize that it was 90 minutes… So much information to take in

It was an even longer gap between season 3 finale and 4 premiere too. Like over a year for that one. But, yep. Baltar as president was a disaster before the cylons showed back up. Which was also on him for giving Gina 6 that nuke.

Nathanael Fuller (Polygon Wizard)

"I am stunned!" Yep. That's exactly how most of us felt after this season finale. First it brings a dramatic ending to the election storyline. Then a bunch of ships get blown up when the nuke goes off. Then it throws the time jump curveball at us. Then we get to spend more time than you would expect on New Caprica getting to see where everyone is after a year. And then the Cylons show up at the end and the fleet jumps away. So much to process! Personally I don't think that Gaius just moves on. To me it seems more like he just gives up on trying to deal with anything and attempts to drown his pain in every vice he can possibly get his hands on. That said, no matter how much pain or guilt Gaius may or may not be dealing with at any given moment, you can pretty much count on him to make the selfish choice 95% of the time, many of which have had dire consequences for other people. Huge thanks to Xander...for editing a pause into the end of the video. It made me laugh. 😂 And thanks for the rest of the editing too!

David T

If you’re totally confused and feel like the story could go anywhere from this point, you’re exactly where the show runners want you! 😊 Yes, I was shell-shocked by this episode as well when it first aired. The difference is that we had to wait months for the following season for answers. Thank you Xander for making this series so fun to watch! I love your humorously subtle additions to the editing from time to time!

funnylilgalreacts

I didn’t mean that he just moves on in the sense that it doesn’t affect him. He just keeps doing the same thing instead of trying to fix things.

Louis Marti

One of the greatest TV episodes of all time. You're going to find varying opinions but imo each season is better than the last. In hindsight, there's zero question that Roslin should have just stolen the election lol. And I say this as someone who's favorite character is Baltar. Also, Chief channeling Karl Marx is *chefs kiss*

John

No cold open. No, that shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Erik O

Xander rocks.

Moricant

Thanks for all your hard work, Xander! I still remember watching this the first time. Went in expecting that the election result would be the climax and/or cliffhanger. Then we had Six with the nuke, the time skip, the Cylon arrival - they cranked everything up to 11 and took us somewhere completely unexpected.

MertzRocks

Yes! More Sam Rockwell!! I effing lost it then. Good thing I wasn't drinking milk... (or anything!) Great reaction as always Angela! What does it all mean? Means plenty of excitement for next season! And a big Wayne n Garth "We're not worthy!" gif to thank Xander! You rock! (cut to Beavis n Butthead headbanging gif (lol))

Fanchman

I don't mind the time jump, but I think they could have eliminated a couple of the filler episodes and spent more time on New Caprica prior to the Cylons arriving.

HawaiiMongoose

“I feel like I need to pay attention to every word that is being spoken right now.” Indeed! That actually applies to pretty much the whole series, all the way through to the end. Of course one can still enjoy the show without being so attentive, but I think with understanding comes appreciation, and following the dialogue closely makes it far easier to pick up on all the plot line and character arc intricacies. If that means not being able to talk a lot, no worries. Your facial reactions by themselves say so much, LOL. And you always do a great job of sharing your detailed thoughts in the intros and outros.

Cei Stockport

Applause for them for seeking permission from Mario Savio's widow to use his famous 'Bodies Upon The Gear's' speech that Tyrol delivers almost word for word. At least Helo got a promotion (Captains insignia) and position (XO). Cally's 'You've been hurting a long time Chief, err yes YOU fatally shot his girlfriend. I'll save the rest for next episode.

Nate Terry

the loudest voice isn't always right. America is a republic. that means "representational democracy." The Founders had one major theme when building the government and the constitution...."Power corrupts!" anywhere and everywhere they could disperse power, they did. 3 branches of government to divide power from the top. split the congress into 2 houses to give representation to both the ppl and to the states. Electoral college to prevent mob rule. etc. Popular votes would take the voice away from some of the quieter ppl. Electoral college forces the politicians to focus on more of the nation instead of focusing on just the large cities looks like this election was a popular vote.. Season 3 is gonna get GOOD!

funnylilgalreacts

The electoral college is broken. The populace is forced to be ruled by the minority. As we’ve seen year after year, this system is broken.

MertzRocks

Truth. But it can't JUST be popular votes either. How to fix the broken? GIANT shrug over here, sorry.

Nate Terry

What about it is broken? It's doing what the founders intended it to do. Every voice counts right? Every voice is equal right? Popular vote would make the candidates only focus on large cities. In office, only legislation that large cities want will be voted on. Govt programs large cities want funded will be all that's funded. Politicians want to stay in office and give their voting base want they want first. A popular vote would make all voices unequal.

funnylilgalreacts

I’m not really going to have a debate about it. But I can at least tell you why I think the way I do. The minority shouldn’t be able to determine how the majority is governed. Rights and freedoms are stripped away because of a minority vote, that’s hurting the populace. A state with a small population, like North Dakota should not factor in equal to California i.e. the Senate.

Cei Stockport

The usual voting procedure for a democracy is the PRINCIPLE of every vote carries the same weight. The US Congress is split between the House Of Representatives (popular vote) and Senate (weighted vote) with neither having weight over the other which is inherently UNDEMOCRATIC. Then there is the Presidency which the Electoral College is still not legally (only coventionaly) bound to follow the popular vote. After THAT you move on to the Judiciary which consists of political appointee's who sit until they die or retire. Add in the fact that the head of the Executive can appoint anyone to any position (almost) and the end result is an awful lot of political power in the hands of people who either have a very weighted vote behind them or no vote at all.

Cei Stockport

Mario Savio. They got his widow's permission to use the speech even though they didn't have too.

Cei Stockport

Yeah, very forced and a little creepy. But if you rewatch you can play a game of 'check the third finger of everyones left hand'

Pistols O'Brien

I've been looking forward to you getting to season 3 since the beginning, lol. My favorite season BY FAR

Nate Terry

Fair enough. Guess I thought the government was suppose to govern for all ppl, not just the majority. I don't live inside city limits...the closest town I live near is 500 ppl. I'd hate to live in a country where my vote didn't even count. Anyhow. I have to say I'm so glad you are reacting to battlestar! I loved your reaction to Brother Cavil's reveal as a Cylon. Everytime I watch the scene where cavil is counseling Chief after attacking callie...Stockwell's eyes loom so dark, he made me believe he was machine

Paul mix

This two-parter and the upcoming episodes make up one of the best storylines of the series. Such a rollercoaster ahead of you… :)

Mirax

I mean Cavil did tell you that he was at all the Cylon meetings!

Cei Stockport

I promise this is my last word. The system can hedge plenty of 'safeguards ' around what some people call th tyranny of the majority, but to be considered representative the popularly elected body MUST have the final say on legislation a the end of the process however long it takes. Politicians are supposed to represent all of their voters, unfortunately some countries are so polarized they barely bother to pretend. (And of course the 'senior' body has to prevented from gerrymandering.)

Ma9Na (ma-nine-nuh)

The Cylon arrival on New Caprica is a stunning piece of cinematography both visual and soundscape. The use of the screaming engines is a weapon used by the Germans in ww2. The sound caused more damage psycologically than the bombs being dropped. My fave scene of all time. Next season please Angela and great job Xander!!

Cei Stockport

And she got one hell of promotion out of it. Petty Officer 2nd class (third lowest rank) to what looks to be full Lt in one go. Definitely no nepotism there.

Simon Chamberland

The second half of that episode felt like it could've been the entire first half of season 3, that was wild. I should not have watched this before bed, no way I'm sleeping now, too many gears turning. Gotta say I'm with you on Adama's mustache, I'm def pro facial hair for men but something ain't right with that thing 😂

Wade Wallenstein

I waited until watching both reactions before saying anything and you didn't disappoint! I'm happy that you've watched Quantum Leap and immediately recognized Dean Stockwell. Your reaction to him showing up in Part 1 was great but when it's revealed he is a Cylon in Part 2 was AWESOME! It was such a mind blowing when people watched when it originally aired. Also loved your reaction when you found out what Roslin was going to do. The time jump was done brilliantly and was a great way to end a season. We had to wait months just thinking about that finale and it drove fans crazy. You're in for an even wilder ride! Also, thank you Xander! I'm enjoying all of this and it wouldn't be possible without you.

Lima Bravo

Indeed that was a reference to a Mario Savio speech in the 1960s as mentioned in the podcast by Moore. I don't know if Mario was referencing Karl or not.

Lima Bravo

It is perfect as it is 🤣 . I like Xander's sense of humour from your mistakes.

Lima Bravo

I had to do the same when watching Deadwood (and rewatching every episode for the subtilities). Every sentence carry a hint from the character's view point or a critical element to the plot coming. And of course, just for Ian McShane 😌

Lima Bravo

It is great scenes indeed. Was that the faith screams in the soundtrack during Baltar's surrender conversation and during the Centurions walking down New Caprica? Showrunners said the march was a reference to German soldiers walking down Paris while locals were just watching silently.

Ma9Na (ma-nine-nuh)

The raiders and heavy raiders arriving overhead. The Stuka dive bombers in WW2 created a similiar sound. Menacingf, haunting and impressive! Agree about the Centaurians marching. So many Earth military terms used in this show, eg "Call the Ball"

Matt Brookshier

I haven't seen it mentioned but Starbuck is clearly on the same arc as Tighe, just a generation separating them. They butt heads because they are the same personality. Both very strong military types, fall back to drinking as a coping mechanism, even the scene with Anders and Kara drinking and carousing in front of Lee has shades of Ellen/Tighe. So far it looks like they may have realized this and become friends.
