My understanding of Bill Adama is that he's very much a tough military leader. He's not particularly good with emotions and relationships. But what he does understand is loyalty. You DO NOT fuck with his people. So it's really fitting how he absolutely struggles to hug Apollo in the mini series but chooses to express his love through loyalty in Ep5. And the same pragmatic "shit happens, deal with it" attitude that leaves Apollo hanging after the Olymic Carrier is probably also the reason why he is relatively quick to reconcile with Kara.
