Ellie's love of her gun comes from giving her a sense of agency in a chaotic world. After Bryan was killed, and Joel was talking to Ellie about it ,it seemed that he was affected by it at least as much as Ellie. She seems to be getting harder inside as the trip goes on. More like Joel. She didn't mourn when Sam died. She just wanted to get on with their travels. Much like Joel did when Tess was infected. He just grabbed Ellie and left.

In that world I don't think people have time to mourn, if you know what I mean. They have to keep moving, but I am sure they are still sad. In fact maybe they keep moving so they don't have to stop and think about all they have seen and done.

Another episode where they give us characters to care about... only to kill them. I thought Sam was a pretty cool little dude.

She did mourn. Just because someone mourns in silence, doesn't mean they aren't mourning. That I'm sorry she left on Sam's grave... yeah, that's grief talking. She just keeps things bottled up as many of us do.
