The first time I watched this movie, when Vanessa died I just said "nope" and turned it off.

It's so cruel, I hate that that seems to be what motivates our heroes most the time. Completely unnecessary.

There's a famous fan-hated storyline in Spiderman, "Another Day" (I believe), where they don't just split up Pete/MJ but they make it so that their relationship never happened. The editors demanded their writers do it because they thought Peter was more interesting when he wasn't married. I think in fiction the chase creates a lot more easy writing opportunities for tension that doesn't exist with a healthy relationship so lazy/bad writers default to blowing up relationships so that they can focus on the pursuit rather than writing a strong, healthy relationship... I hate it so much. I understand why they do it, I think, but just... be better writers. Or write a different story about a character that doesn't yet have an established relationship. I eventually watched the rest of this movie several months later; it's very good, I think. If you can get over Vanessa's death which... kind of? I forgot in the end though, where he went back and saved her; if they decide that, moving forward, she is back because he saved her and that was just a gimmick for the 2nd movie, I'm 100% okay with that. Over, you know, having it as a throw-in gag for the end credits that isn't canon.
