One of my favorite convention memories was an shirtless Armstrong cosplayer picking me up in a big hug and spinning me around. He wasn't *quite* as ripped, but to be fair, that would be hard to achieve. I still giggle thinking about it. To answer your question about the eye thing, and just some general anime stylistic notes in general- characters closing their eyes while smiling is just meant to indicate a "big" smile, kind of how your face squints up when you grin. Anime of this era relies a lot on the eyes to show emotions, so it's often exaggerated. You'll get better at picking up the visual shorthand the more you watch, but there's a trick to noticing what's meant to be a literal visual cue with the eyes and what's just a stylistic choice. Every artist/series is different, and have their own particular quirks. Dramatic wind, glasses flashing, eye details, the little "soul escaping" jokes, the vein pop lines, etc. I think Hayao Miyazaki's signature "dramatic hair puff" is probably my favorite anime visual quirk.
