It really sucks that Junpei had such a cool mom and then she makes her exit right after we meet her. It does help keep up in the tension in this series though when you know that various people can die. Some anime series kinda of lose the thrill when everyone constantly makes it out alive no matter what the situation. Also, Nanami really nailed the "walk away from the explosion without looking back" look when he finished the fight heh.

There were a couple hints about those burn marks. We saw a brief flash of bullies pushing a lit cigarette towards Junpei and his reaction to his mom smoking, but those are easy to overlook.
